Y2K Scare of 2009.
Everywhere you go, you can see and here in one form or another people getting all hyped up or joking about the "Swine Flu" or as I refer to it as the "Pork Scare."
This weekend was an interesting one. It seems as though a Catholic church in the Orlando area encouraged the attenders that they had in their mass to not shake hands with other people attending. My church, First Baptist Orlando did not go to that extreme, but were planning on practicing the regular safe guards, which is nothing out of the ordinary. If I was making an executive decision on the matter, I would have gone with the option that my church took. I believe that people are extremely over reacting to this swine flu scare. People do not get this hyped up over the regular flu each year.
The Media and Communications Pastor of First Baptist Orlando, Scott Link was interviewed by two news networks here in Orlando on Sunday morning. Scott answered their questions honestly of what our church in regards to the Swine Flu. The interview aired during the Sunday evening news. One network quoted him correctly the other network misquoted him completely. If you listened to the interview, you would blatently see that was not the point Scott was making. This is a prime example of how the networks misquote and mislead their audiences. Is that what you want from your news networks?
I remember a couple of years preceding the turn of the century when the media was sending everyone into a panic about every computer system, government and banking computers systems were going to crash at the turn of the century. This caused many people to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars in preparation for it...in buying food for week/months and taking precautions to prepare for a long outage of food and supplies. Corporations spend thousands if not more dollars to become Y2K compliant...reconfigured databases and software systems all for something the media was getting the audience all hyped up for. What happened when the clock turned from December 31st, 1999 at 23:59 to January 1st, 2000 at 00:00, absolutely nothing. Power was still on, money was in everyone's bank account and computer systems still functioned. So what was the scare for? Did we over react?
I think we did. The media continued to push a non-threat so much that the American people started being concerned. They recommended many things to do and in reality we did not have to do anything. It could have been another nice new year.
I think this swine flu is the same thing. The liberal end of the media is totally over reacting. Since they choose to not give a balanced report on what is really happening is Washington, they have to dig and dig for some sort of story to blow out of proportion. It was Bush, picking him apart piece by piece. They arrogantly selectively report specific things about Obama. Do not give the truth about what he is doing, destroying, or other leaders he is bowing to, this leads the media to dig into something that is not really a threat to get a reaction out of the people. So explain to me how this is supposed to be the most transparents administration ever if the American people are being lied to?

How do you turn a Swine Flu/Y2k blog post into something "against" Obama...man you're talented.
Just a couple of things i'd like to say responding to this...
1. President Obama and Napalitano and Sibelius all said that we need to stay calm and take things as they come. Even this weekend B.O. acknowledged and thanked the Bush administration for their hard work in making our current response to this thing good. My point is, i dont think that this administration has blown this thing out of proportion. I think they are trying to inform the public (who seems to be getting news from a very biased media and social networks like twitter) with real facts and with updates on what the govt is doing.
2. I have seen many reports on are we overreacting and interviews from the CDC and other top officials who are asking the media to slow down and to relax on this topic. But News Media is a business and they will tell the stories that people are interested in, ratings equals money.
3. I guess transparency is all in the eye of the beholder. I think this administration has been waaaaay more open than the previous two. Do i think they should be a little more transparent, maybe...as long as it doesnt risk national security, that type of thing. But The administration cannot dictate the stories that the News outlets carry.
I agree the media is biased but you yourself like watching FOX NEWS. I'm not bashing it but we need to be a society who does research for ourselves ya know? Like I finished reading the entire budget and when i get time i will be reading the last stimulus package.
BUUUT, i feel ya kiddo. We need to put this "H1N1, SWINE FLU" into perspective. the amount of people affected here in the states doesnt even yet amount to 1%. Dont get me wrong, i am still a little nervous and care about those infected, but i'm keeping it all relative.
one.
No, the liberal media is not being 100% informative. For example, they completely misquoted what the Media and Communications Pastor at First Orlando said during an interview this weekend. Same thing happened with the Tea Parties. They barely acknowledged them and turned them into something they were not.
I do, unlike others watch other news networks. I choose FOX as my primary news source because they give the most adequate coverage of both ends of the stories and let the viewer decide. Disagree if you will, but that is the truth of the matter. Other networks say they do that, but do not. FOX runs many many stories that CNN, MSNBC and others do not even touch. So who is being the most informative? Yes, FOX. Others hate them because they are Anti-Obama. Well someone should be. I do my research, so do not call me out on not doing it.

No No, i'm sorry if you feel like i am calling you out for watching fox or not doing research. Thats not what I mean at all and i apologize for how that came across.
The point that i was saying is that we can all be accused of watching a biased news network or reading a biased newspaper. I am a CNN junkie, i'll admit it. Thats why i can tell you that there are reports of media overreacting because i see them all of the time there. Even while at work i am listening to cnnradio and they literally just had a lady on there answering questions on whether this is all media hype. I have noticed that CNN has cut back their coverage quite drastically as compared to last week. But its not my only source of info ya know. They do tend to trend liberal and focus on Obama but even now that the first 100 days is over they are loosening up which i had expected.
CNN even carried the tea parties live. No commentary. Just broke into live programming with the tea parties and had people speak about them. I feel when i say media bias, i am more so talking about the commentary shows like Hannity, AndersonCooper360, 20/20, bla bla bla. I like how CNN presents the "news" and how interactive they are. And i like being able to hear from other people watching the same stuff i am.
You watch FOX, a conservative news org. No one can deny that, nor should anyone try. I watch FOX news as well because i do want to hear other perspectives. You yourself has said to me that i come from a neutral place when it comes to politics, and i do. I dont deny the fact that you do your own research at all.
Anyway, my response was in no way an attack on you or your blog or your person. Remember i agreed with you on pretty much 95% of your blog friend. I just suck at communicating. I'm sorry.
They are overreacting with the swine flu just like they did with the bird flu. How come they aren't doing news on real problems? The amount of people starving in the world? HIV/AIDS and how many people it kills daily?? Swine flu does not even scratch the surface of these more severe problems.
I totally agree, Michelle. 100%
At this point, it is just ridiculous how much attention they are giving it. I am sure that somehow George Bush will be blamed for it, eventually. LOL
